Born in southern Indiana, Dan Deem formed his photographic roots in sports and journalism. During his years at Indiana State University, Deem recorded images ranging from campus events to campaigns of U.S. presidents and first ladies. In the late 1970's, Deem covered Larry Bird's collegiate career as extensively as anyone while earning acclaim in his field. His images graced newspapers and magazines internationally, appearing in such venues as 'The Saturday Evening Post' and the cover of the book "Hoosiers". His work was also displayed on NBC's Today Show.
Deem left photojournalism in 1980 to pursue other interests, but in 2003, inspired by a family friend, he took up the camera once again to pursue his passion. Adopting his own style that Dan describes as "Somewhat left of traditional", Dan invites the viewer to daydream. He attempts to take you back as a child to your grandfather's farm, or to a beautiful moonlit night on the porch swing with the love of your life, or even to revisit the devastating lonliness that life can sometimes bring.
